Signs That It’s Time to Replace Your Whole House Fan

Whole house fans are a great way to cool down the home and remove air pollution while keeping utility costs down. They’ve been around for decades, and many modern whole house fans are extremely effective and quiet. Also, quality whole house fans, like all of our offerings, are built to last many years.

However, nothing lasts forever, even the best whole house fans. So if you’ve had a whole house fan for a long time, or inherited one in your new home, you’ll want to look out for the signs that suggest it’s time to look for a replacement.

Below, we’ll go over the three main warnings that signal you should replace your whole house fan.

1) Your fan stopped working.

If your fan isn’t operating, it could be for a number of reasons including:

  • Problems with the outlet or extension cord for the whole house fan.
  • Malfunctioning thermostat.
  • Blown fuse or problems with your main breaker.

If it’s none of these problems, it may be because the fan itself is experiencing problems like a burnt-out motor or loose wiring. If it’s just loose wiring, an electrician should be able to help you, if not, you’ll have to replace the motor or buy a new fan altogether.

2) Your fan is loud.

Hopefully, your whole house fan is not too loud. But if you notice that it starts to make unusual sounds, this often means there’s a problem with it.

If your whole house fan is making a loud humming noise, try running the fan on low speed. However, if you buy a high-quality and quiet whole house fan, you shouldn’t have this problem to begin with.

Other causes for noise can be poor installation, damage to the fan blades, or loose louvres that rattle.

If there’s not an easy fix to the noise, you may want to consider replacing your fan altogether.

3) Your fan is around 10 to 15 years old.

Most whole house fans are warranted around 5 to 15 years old depending on the model and seller. The best whole house fans should last between 10 to 15 years old depending on the model, frequency of use, and environment.

So if you’ve had your fan for a decade or more, it may be time to replace it. Have you noticed that your fan is getting louder or that it’s not working as efficiently as it once was? If so, consider upgrading to a modern fan that’s likely more efficient and quieter than your previous one.
